Preen Keeper · Wine chiller & pourer

Your fridge already chilled it. The problem is the next hour.

Preen Keeper is a frozen steel rod that stands in your already-chilled bottle and keeps it cold at the table, while you pour through its spout. It won't chill a warm bottle. We print that on the box, next to our own thermometer readings.

Preen Keeper · 75cl bottles
What it does

Keeps an already-chilled bottle cold for longer at the table.

What it won't do

Chill a warm bottle. On a room-temperature red it takes off only a few degrees.

Before it goes in

Pour the first glass. The rod takes up room, so a full bottle would overflow.

Stainless steel rod · frozen core · clear acrylic spout · Serve whites, rosé & fizz at 7–10°C
Why it goes warm

Your wine starts warming the moment it leaves the fridge.

You didn't chill it wrong. The fridge did its job. A cold bottle on the table drifts toward the temperature of the room, and today's rooms are warmer than the ones "room temperature" was named for.

12°C → 17.6°C The average UK home in winter, 1970 against 2011 (estimated, Housing Energy Fact File 2013). In 1970 there could be ice on the inside of the windows.

One bottle, one hour, a 20°C room

In one informal test, a fridge-cold bottle left the white-wine serving range within about an hour. Our own Log, below, shows what Preen Keeper does to that hour.

One bottle, wine type not stated (Sensorist, c. 2013). Serving range: WSET and Decanter.

And every usual fix costs you something.

Costs you: flavour

Cold, then watered down by the second glass. Plenty of people do it anyway, and that's your call.

Costs you: a dry table

It drips, floats the label off, and needs the in, out and dry routine every time you pour.

Back to the fridge

The wine stays cold. You don't stay at the table. Every top-up is a trip to the kitchen.

How it works

The freezer block from your cool box, moved inside the bottle.

Nobody expects a freezer block to cool a warm sandwich. It keeps a cold one cold. Same here.

Preen Keeper is a stainless steel rod with a frozen core. Stand it in an already-chilled bottle and the warmth coming in through the glass is drawn into the frozen core, so your wine warms more slowly. You keep pouring through the spout with the rod in place.

  1. Clear pour spout. Pours with the rod in. It's acrylic, and yes, it touches your wine.
  2. Black collar. Food-grade silicone. Sits flush in the neck, like a cork.
  3. Aerating chamber. Air comes in through a small hole, so it pours smoothly.
  4. Stainless steel rod. 304 (18/8) food-grade steel.
  5. Frozen core. Where the cold is stored: a sealed, food-safe coolant.
~30×

A gram of thawing core soaks up about 30 times more heat than a gram of steel. That's why a full freeze matters more than the metal.

How to use it

Step one: pour yourself a glass.

Freeze it once, then it's pour, stand it in, pour.

  1. Before

    Freeze it

Two hours in the freezer, or just keep it there between bottles.

  2. A full bottle overflows when the rod goes in; with one glass poured out, the rod fits. Full bottle overflows One glass out fits Step 1

    Pour the first glass

The rod takes up room, so the first glass is yours. Skip it and a full bottle overflows.

  3. Step 2

    Stand it in

Slide the frozen rod into your already-chilled bottle until the collar sits snug in the neck.

  4. Step 3

    Pour through it

Leave it in and pour through the clear spout. The bottle stays on the table.

Afterwards: rinse, dry, back in the freezer. Hand wash only.

Keep the bottle on the table.

Still properly cold when we finished the cheese

We do long Sunday lunches and the ice bucket always left a ring on the table. Put this in a bottle of Picpoul straight from the fridge and it was still properly cold by the cheese course. Pour a glass first like the card says, or it overflows (ask me how I know).

Bought Dad the Set. He hasn't touched his corkscrew since

His hands aren't what they were and corks had become a battle. The opener lifts them straight out, the Keeper lives in his freezer, and the stopper means a bottle lasts him the week. The whole set looked far dearer than it was.

Beautiful box, nothing stuck on the front

Arrived looking like it came from a department store, so I could wrap it straight away. The little card with the two rules was perfect for my mum, who doesn't do gadgets.

Will it fit?

Tested on the bottles you actually buy.

One rod length can't fit everything, so we tested and listed the results, including the two it doesn't suit. If yours isn't here, ask us before you order.

Why it works

Your fridge does the chilling. Preen Keeper does the keeping. A frozen core inside a stainless steel rod stands in the middle of your already-chilled bottle and soaks up the warmth coming in from the room, so the wine stays in its serving range for longer. You pour through the clear spout without taking it out. It won't chill a warm bottle, and we say so on the box.

Questions

The questions people ask before they buy.

Still wondering? Email hello@trypreen.com

Will it chill a warm bottle?

No, and we'd rather you knew before you buy. On a room-temperature bottle it takes off only a couple of degrees. Chill the bottle in the fridge first; Preen Keeper keeps it cold once it's out.

How long does it keep a bottle cold?

In our test, a fridge-cold 75cl bottle stayed below 10°C for 90 minutes in a 20°C room, against 38 minutes without it. A hot garden shortens that; a cool dining room stretches it.

Why do I have to pour a glass first?

The rod takes up room in the bottle. Pour the first glass, then slide it in, or a full bottle will overflow.

Will it fit my bottle?

It fits standard 75cl and 70cl bottles, screw caps, Prosecco and Champagne, and deep punts. It works less well in magnums and doesn't suit half bottles. Full results in the fit list.

Can I use it with red wine?

Yes. Give the bottle 20 minutes in the fridge first to take it to cellar temperature, then Preen Keeper holds it there through dinner. On its own, it only takes the edge off a warm red.

What's inside it? Is it safe?

A 304 (18/8) stainless steel rod with a sealed, food-safe coolant core. The spout is BPA-free acrylic and the collar is food-grade silicone.

Will it keep the wine in my glass cold?

No. It works inside the bottle. Once the wine is in your glass, it warms like any other glass.

How long does it need in the freezer?

Two hours. Easiest is to keep it in the freezer between bottles. With the Pair or the Set, one is always ready.

I've seen chill sticks for about £7. Why pay more?

Honestly, the idea is the same. What you get with Preen is proof it works (our published Log), a fit list so you know it suits your bottles, food-grade materials named in full, a gift box that arrives looking new, a free gift note, a 1-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Will it arrive before Christmas?

Free tracked delivery takes 5–8 days, so leave a little time before the big day. Christmas gifts can be returned until 31 January.

Does the opener work on every bottle?

It works on still wine with a natural or synthetic cork: take off the foil, push the needle through the cork, give it a few pumps. Screw caps don't need it. Never use it on Champagne, Prosecco or any sparkling wine: the bottle is already under pressure.

What does the stopper fit?

Standard 75cl bottles, still or sparkling. Press it on and twist to lock: Prosecco and Champagne keep their fizz, and still wine stays fresh until tomorrow. It isn't made for magnums.

Can I send it straight to someone, with a note?

Yes. Tick "Make it a gift", write your note, and enter their address at checkout. No prices go in the parcel.
